The rain was pouring as the Cult of Twisted Fate travelled to face the Jed Eye team for the first round of the playoffs.
The Khorne Daemons elected to receive the opening kick-off, and after a long, drawn out drive, where a lot of blows were exchanged, both teams were still looking very healthy as the 1st touchdown was scored in turn 8.
The Skaven team then spent a long time considering how to position their players ready for a 1-turn touchdown, only for the Rat Ogre to fall over in as he started the drive.
As the 2nd half got underway, the Skaven thrower repeatedly tried to pick up and pass the ball to the mutated Gutter Runner with the large hand, but the rain kept getting in the receiver's eye, and he dropped it time after time.
The Khorne players sensed an opportunity to swarm the ball, and pushed themselves to their limit to surround the ball, which caused the Gutter Runner to pick the ball up off the floor, rather than wait for another failed catch. A few dodges later, and s warm of Gutter Runners had formed a loose cage down the wing, and the Skaven tested their luck trying to stall the game out for a draw.
The coaches, realising that overtime might be looming started reaching for their playbooks as they had never been in this position before. The Daemons tried one last blitz to win the match as the lone Gutter Runner was isolated next to the touchline, holding on to the ball for dear life, but as the attacking player fell next to the target, the coach thought long and hard about using his last re-roll, or accept the fate of Nuffle. He opted to take the initial result, leaving the Skaven to level the score.
Their used the single turn they had left to flatten the Rat Ogre, with the Bloodthirster choosing to Pile On. This resulted in the Skaven apothecary earning his money, saving the big guy from death, but leaving him unavailable for the next match, whenever it might be.
Overtime led to the Daemon's choosing to receive the kick, securing the ball, and forming a very solid cage. Running out of options, the Skaven deliberated over sacrificing a player to break a cage, or trying their best to stall the drive.
The Bloodthirster, supported by Withergrasp Doubledrool, chose to clear a path down the wing, allowing Foresight to have some protection as he crossed the pitch to be surrounded by his teammates.
Throwing caution to the wind, the Skaven risked a chance to throw a block on the blodging ball carrier, and knocked him out. This inspired the mutated Gutter Runner to leap into the scrum and pick up the ball, before dodging away, and getting stunned as he fell. A series of scatters successive scatters resulted in the ball landing in no man's land, inviting anyone who would risk the pickup a perfect opportunity to decide the match.
The teams both sharpened their knuckle dusters, and players started leaving the pitch, resulting in a temporary numbers advantage for the Skaven, who snatched the change to pick up the ball and run away with it, being carried by their alleged steroid-abusing Gutter Runner, who managed to survive the incoming blocks, use assistance from his teammates to break in to space, and rush to the line for the win.
In a 5 hour match, both coaches were seen smiling and shaking hands as the fans left the stadium. The Skaven progress, but will they be able to survive the semi-finals with their Rat Ogre and leaping Gutter Runner missing the match? Only time will tell.
